They will tell the nations of my splendor. 66:20 They will bring back all your countrymen 21  from all the nations as an offering to the Lord. They will bring them 22  on horses, in chariots, in wagons, on mules, and on camels 23  to my holy hill Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “just as the Israelites bring offerings to the Lord’s temple in ritually pure containers.

[42:4]  1 tn For rhetorical effect the terms used to describe the “crushed (רָצַץ, ratsats) reed” and “dim (כָּהָה, kahah) wick” in v. 3 are repeated here.

[42:4]  2 tn Or “islands” (NIV); NLT “distant lands beyond the sea.”

[42:4]  3 tn Or “his law” (KJV, ASV, NASB, NIV) or “his instruction” (NLT).

[42:10]  4 tn Heb “his praise.” The phrase stands parallel to “new song” in the previous line.

[42:10]  5 tn Heb “and its fullness”; NASB, NIV “and all that is in it.”

[42:10]  6 tn Or “islands” (NASB, NIV); NLT “distant coastlands.”

[49:1]  7 tn Or “islands” (NASB, NIV); NLT “in far-off lands.”

[49:1]  sn The Lord’s special servant, introduced in chap. 42, speaks here of his commission.

[49:1]  8 tn Heb “called me from the womb.”

[49:1]  9 tn Heb “from the inner parts of my mother he mentioned my name.”

[51:5]  10 tn Heb “my righteousness [or “vindication”] is near.”

[51:5]  11 tn Heb “my deliverance goes forth.”

[51:5]  12 tn Heb “and my arms will judge [on behalf of] nations.”

[51:5]  13 tn Or “islands” (NIV); TEV “Distant lands.”

[51:5]  14 tn Heb “for my arm” (so NIV, NRSV).

[66:19]  15 tn Heb “and I will set a sign among them.” The precise meaning of this statement is unclear. Elsewhere “to set a sign” means “perform a mighty act” (Ps 78:43; Jer 32:20), “make [someone] an object lesson” (Ezek 14:8), and “erect a [literal] standard” (Ps 74:4).

[66:19]  16 tn Some prefer to read “Put” (i.e., Libya).

[66:19]  17 sn That is, Lydia (in Asia Minor).

[66:19]  18 tn Heb “drawers of the bow” (KJV and ASV both similar).

[66:19]  19 sn Javan is generally identified today as Greece (so NIV, NCV, NLT).

[66:19]  20 tn Or “islands” (NIV).

[66:20]  21 tn Heb “brothers” (so NIV); NCV “fellow Israelites.”

[66:20]  22 tn The words “they will bring them” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[66:20]  23 tn The precise meaning of this word is uncertain. Some suggest it refers to “chariots.” See HALOT 498 s.v. *כִּרְכָּרָה.

[9:27]  24 tn Heb “may God enlarge Japheth.” The words “territory and numbers” are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[9:27]  sn There is a wordplay (paronomasia) on the name Japheth. The verb יַפְתְּ (yaft, “may he enlarge”) sounds like the name יֶפֶת (yefet, “Japheth”). The name itself suggested the idea. The blessing for Japheth extends beyond the son to the descendants. Their numbers and their territories will be enlarged, so much so that they will share in Shem’s territories. Again, in this oracle, Noah is looking beyond his immediate family to future generations. For a helpful study of this passage and the next chapter, see T. O. Figart, A Biblical Perspective on the Race Problem, 55-58.

[9:27]  25 tn In this context the prefixed verbal form is a jussive (note the distinct jussive forms both before and after this in vv. 26 and 27).

[10:2]  26 sn The Greek form of the name Japheth, Iapetos, is used in Greek tradition for the ancestor of the Greeks.

[10:2]  27 sn Gomer was the ancestor of the Cimmerians. For a discussion of the Cimmerians see E. M. Yamauchi, Foes from the Northern Frontier (SBA), 49-61.

[10:2]  28 sn For a discussion of various proposals concerning the descendants of Magog see E. M. Yamauchi, Foes from the Northern Frontier (SBA), 22-24.

[10:2]  29 sn Madai was the ancestor of the Medes, who lived east of Assyria.

[10:2]  30 sn Javan was the father of the Hellenic race, the Ionians who lived in western Asia Minor.

[10:2]  31 sn Tubal was the ancestor of militaristic tribes that lived north of the Black Sea. For a discussion of ancient references to Tubal see E. M. Yamauchi, Foes from the Northern Frontier (SBA), 24-26.

[10:2]  32 sn Meshech was the ancestor of the people known in Assyrian records as the Musku. For a discussion of ancient references to them see E. M. Yamauchi, Foes from the Northern Frontier (SBA), 24-26.

[10:2]  33 sn Tiras was the ancestor of the Thracians, some of whom possibly became the Pelasgian pirates of the Aegean.

[10:3]  34 sn The descendants of Gomer were all northern tribes of the Upper Euphrates.

[10:3]  35 sn Askenaz was the ancestor of a northern branch of Indo-Germanic tribes, possibly Scythians. For discussion see E. M. Yamauchi, Foes from the Northern Frontier (SBA), 63.

[10:3]  36 sn The descendants of Riphath lived in a district north of the road from Haran to Carchemish.

[10:3]  37 sn Togarmah is also mentioned in Ezek 38:6, where it refers to Til-garimmu, the capital of Kammanu, which bordered Tabal in eastern Turkey. See E. M. Yamauchi, Foes from the Northern Frontier (SBA), 26, n. 28.

[10:4]  38 sn The descendants of Elishah populated Cyprus.

[10:4]  39 sn The descendants of Tarshish settled along the southern coast of what is modern Turkey. However, some identify the site Tarshish (see Jonah 1:3) with Sardinia or Spain.

[10:4]  40 sn The name Kittim is associated with Cyprus, as well as coastlands east of Rhodes. It is used in later texts to refer to the Romans.

[10:4]  41 tc Most of the MT mss read “Dodanim” here, but 1 Chr 1:7 has “Rodanim,” perhaps referring to the island of Rhodes. But the Qere reading in 1 Chr 1:7 suggests “Dodanim.” Dodona is one of the most ancient and revered spots in ancient Greece.

[72:10]  42 sn Tarshish was a distant western port, the precise location of which is uncertain.

[72:10]  43 sn Sheba was located in Arabia.

[72:10]  44 sn Seba was located in Africa.

[2:11]  45 tn Heb “will be awesome over [or, “against”] them.”

[2:11]  46 tn Or “certainly.”

[2:11]  47 tn The meaning of this rare Hebrew word is unclear. If the meaning is indeed “weaken,” then this line may be referring to the reduction of these gods’ territory through conquest (see Adele Berlin, Zephaniah [AB 25A], 110-11). Cf. NEB “reduce to beggary”; NASB “starve”; NIV “when he destroys”; NRSV “shrivel.”

[2:11]  48 tn Heb “and all the coastlands of the nations will worship [or, “bow down”] to him, each from his own place.”
